Sometimes the best ideas take the longest to materialize. For Fallene Wells and her husband, Kyle, it was ten years of dreaming about opening a salon where they could offer an uplifting experience and environment unlike any other in Denver – positive, inspiring, engaging, trend-setting and truly sustainable.
Designed to offer more than standard hair care services, Fallene and Kyle’s concept for their salon, Let Em Have It, included providing a “platform for other artists and stylists to present their work and create a network of people doing the same thing.” Their business has since become a hub for discovering the latest creative and business trends contributing to long-term success. “I’m passionate about business and wanted to do more for others who are just getting started,” Fallene recalls.
In 2013, Fallene and Kyle’s dream came true when they were referred by the City and County of Denver to Colorado Enterprise Fund (CEF) for a loan. This financing helped them open their salon as a “Certified Green Business and Organic Concept Salon that promotes a healthy and sustainable lifestyle, and celebrates creative community.”
Using the CEF loan to purchase custom-made furniture from India as well as recycled and vintage furnishings for their salon gave the place the unique appeal and feel Kyle and Fallene desired. “With our CEF loan,” Fallene said, “we were able to get our business open, get great feedback from the community, and have continued to grow since.”
Fallene has found opportunities beyond the salon to be a successful and influential force for good toward eliminating waste in the beauty industry. As Colorado’s first certified Green Circle Salon and only the 3rd salon in the world to become a certified B-Corporation, Let Em Have It Salon is committed to sustainable business practices and is now an employee-owned enterprise. The business is also 100% wind-powered and was recently voted the Best for Colorado in 2017. The salon also continues to expand its services and community involvement to keep its neighborhood safe and clean.
“It’s become a roadmap for us, for how we’re doing in the community, how we’re treating our employees, how to be more sustainable,” remarks Fallene. “It’s a perfect fit for us.” Much like CEF which Fallene claims is unlike any other loan company she’s heard of. “They don’t just give you money and let you run with it. They genuinely care about the growth of your business and support you with any resources that you may need.”
